Injection Molded Plastic Pallets: Process, Benefits, and Applications

Published 2025-04-10 · WEE Pallets · Dongguan, China

Introduction

Injection molding is the dominant manufacturing method for precision plastic pallets, accounting for over 70% of global production. It offers the best combination of strength, dimensional accuracy, and design flexibility. Here's how it works and why it matters for your pallet choice.

How Injection Molding Works for Pallets

Molten HDPE or PP resin is injected under extremely high pressure (500-2,000+ bar) into a precision-machined steel mold. The plastic fills every cavity, rib, and detail of the mold. After cooling for 60-120 seconds, the mold opens and the finished pallet is ejected. Cycle time: typically 1-3 minutes per pallet.

Advantages of Injection Molded Pallets

AdvantageWhy It Matters
Dimensional precision±1 mm tolerances — critical for automation and conveyor compatibility
Complex geometriesNine-leg, picture frame, interlocking, RFID pockets, anti-slip textures
Structural foam optionDense outer skin + cellular core = lighter weight + high strength
Consistent qualityEvery pallet from the same mold is identical — batch after batch
High-volume production1-3 minute cycle times enable 15,000+ units/day from a single factory
Finish optionsSmooth, textured, logo-molded, color-matched — all in one step

Structural Foam Molding: A Step Further

In structural foam injection molding, a blowing agent is added to the molten resin. This creates a pallet with a dense, smooth outer skin and a cellular foam core. The result: 10-20% weight reduction with comparable strength, better stiffness-to-weight ratio, and no sink marks on the surface. Ideal for rackable and heavy-duty pallets.
